• GMO crops - the next organic food

    This speech is mostly based on this video by Kurzgesagt - In a Nutshell, on GMOs. After watching the video, I decided to do some readings about GMO. To me, one of the most frustrating things in life is living in a misinformed society that prevents progress. There are too many people with irrational fear about GMO or technology in general. People like the folks at Kurzgesagt are making things better by creating high-quality science videos with fact-based content. I hope I can do the same to help more people understand science.

  • Virtual reality - more than just for games

    I stumbled upon CVR Conf, a virtual reality expo for both the industry folks and the general public, at the Vancouver Convention center on a weekend. I’ve always wanted to learn more about virtual reality, and the student ticket happened to be ~1/4 of a regular ticket. I had a blast, went home and did some research. It seemed to me that CVR conf was a bit game-oriented, even though virtual reality can have so many more applications. It has the power to greatly improve some people’s lives.

  • csv,conf day 1

    I went to csv.conf, a data science conference that centered around journalism, government, open source, and more. At the event, I got to talk to so many people, including librarians, product managers, software engineers, etc. It was really invigorating and refreshing! Data science is truly a multi-disciplinary unicorn. Here I briefly mentioned the talks I went to and what I thought about them.

  • Get started with R

    R is a free software environment for statistical computing and graphing. People have contributed to it so much that if you need to run a certain analysis, there’s most likely a few package for it already. It’s also very useful if you work with data that are too large to load into Excel or other graphical interface tools and that you want to do things faster and neater than clicking and dragging things around.
